The First Stand-Alone Raw Sweets Store in Japan

Interview with Ms. Kurumi, Owner Patissier of Greedy Raw Sweets Daikanyama

Q: Please tell us about the concept of your shop.

Greedy Raw Sweets Daikanyama was founded on August 8th, 2015 as the very first stand-alone raw sweets store in Japan. All the raw sweets available here are gluten free, sugar free, egg free, and dairy free. Varieties of super foods are used abundantly so you can enjoy eating highly nutritious sweets that will make you healthy.

Q: Why did you decide to open this shop?

I was originally working in the beauty industry and realized the importance of your inner body beauty. Your body is made of the things you eat everyday so no matter how hard you work on your outer beauty, the beauty of your inner body can only be changed by your diet. I began to reconsider my diet and learned about raw foods at Japan Living Beauty Association.

A lot of working women eat chocolate, ice cream, and other types of addictive sweets everyday to fight their stress and this could lead to serious diseases when they reach their 30s or 40s. Just by replacing your sweets with something healthier, you can reduce this risk. My mother also loved to eat desserts like ice cream and suffered from breast cancer. I want to provide an alternative to the ordinary sweets using sugar, flour, egg, and milk and provide a better choice.

It’s not easy to completely shift into a raw diet, but if you change your choice of sweets, your body will start to change.

Q: Who are your customers?

My main customers are people with dietary restrictions like those with women’s diseases or allergies, pregnant or breastfeeding moms, and people who are highly conscious about their beauty or health. People in the show business also come to purchase gifts for their models or actresses.

Q: What’s the meaning behind your shop’s name, Greedy Raw Sweets Daikanyama?

My sweets are perfect for “greedy” people who want to get more beautiful and detox by eating something delicious, safe, and low-calorie.

Q: How do you view the gluten free market in Japan?

The awareness is still very low. Many customers find this shop by searching online, and they tell me that it’s not easy to find similar kinds of shops. There are more customers looking for sugar-free items than gluten-free. Gluten-free is still working its way up in Japan.

Q: Does the menu change throughout the year?

Yes. I have new menus like the Tigernuts Caramel Parfait. The Raw Mango Cake is a limited item that is only available during the summer. The berry topping of Very Berry Choco Tart changes depending on the season. Throughout the year, we serve different types of raw tart, cake, chocolate, brownie, biscuit, and smoothies.

Q: Which product do you best recommend?

Tigernuts Caramel Parfait is the newest item. It doesn’t use any caramel but you can taste it. Below the caramel topping is ice cream made from handmade tigernut milk. The resistant starch of the tigernut sinks at the bottom of the milk when you leave it still for about 8 hours, and I use that part for the ice cream.

I also recommend the Raw Rare Cheese Cake. It took me about a year to develop this recipe. It tastes like cheesecake without using any dairy.
