Enterprise Singapore, a Singapore government agency supporting the development of Singaporean companies, the Singapore Food Manufacturers' Association (SFMA), and Meidi-Ya, a supermarket that stocks imported foods, are collaborating to hold the second Singapore Fair in 2024.

This year's concept for the second edition of the event is "Made with Passion." The lineup consists of 68 items, all made in Singapore with a strong sense of passion. The selection includes Singaporean delicacies such as chicken rice, Bak Kwa (pork jerky), truffle butter, kaya jam, oat milk, and black tea imported directly from Singapore by Meidi-Ya. There will also be a new range of frozen dim sum and more, expanding the variety of products available. This event presents a unique opportunity to sample rare delicacies from a country with a perpetual summer, which are not typically available. With a wide range of high-quality products, they also make great gifts.

78 Singaporean food products will be available at Meidi-Ya this time. “The Singapore Fair 2024" is a week-long event held at two stores. What is the main focus of the Singaporean government for this fair? What is the aim of the Fair?

Enterprise Singapore and the Singapore Food Manufacturers’ Association are pleased to partner Meidi-Ya for the second edition of the Singapore Food Fair. Brands such as N’s Flight Kitchen and Gryphon Tea were able to successfully grow their sales in Japan in partnership with Meidi-Ya as a result of last year’s fair. Our main focus and aim of this year’ Fair is to continue to increase awareness of Singapore food products among the Japanese with new brands and new products on board. I hope you enjoyed the recipes developed by Chef Sagawa. It shows that these products can easily be incorporated into Japanese daily cooking and represent a unique cultural bridge between Japan and Singapore.

Mr. Ambassador graduated from a Japanese university (Tokyo Institute of Technology) and has worked in Japan, so the Ambassador has a wealth of knowledge and experience about Japan. Please let us know if you have any mid- to long-term marketing strategies or plans for penetrating the Japanese market as a government.

Singapore and Japan enjoy close people-to-people relations, with many student exchanges over the years, including the opportunity for me to do my undergraduate studies in Japan. Our deep ties contribute to Japan and Singapore viewing each other as trusted partners to do business with. We hope to establish a strong foundation for cooperation with the Japanese government and corporates, and support our Singapore companies and startups to contribute to the market demand and industry development in Japan. This is not just in the areas of food and lifestyle, but especially in the areas of common interests such as digital and green transformation. We are also not limiting our efforts to major cities like Tokyo or Osaka. We want to expand our efforts to engage other regions in Japan who may not know Singapore well. Enterprise Singapore is the government agency that supports the internationalization of Singapore companies – it has been working closely with the local Japanese authorities and organisations to facilitate business projects, as well as organise business missions and activities such as this Singapore Fair.

What is your favorite Japanese food or cuisine?

I enjoy most Japanese cuisine, from the exquisite kaiseki ryori to the simple but delicious yakitori. The unique characteristics of Japanese food are the quality of the ingredients and the aesthetic display of the dishes. Every Japanese meal is a treat for both the eyes and the mouth.

Mr. Taichiro Isono
President & CEO, Meidi-Ya Co., Ltd.

Mr. Isono commented, “Meidi-Ya has been in Singapore for over 20 years and operates three stores. Since last year, the fair has been held at the Hiroo Store and Ebisu Store as a bridge between the food cultures of Japan and Singapore. This year, marking the second time the fair has been held, we will be expanding the number of stores that carry some of our products and broadening the range of products we offer. We hope that you will enjoy the experience of shopping in Singapore as if you were there.”
