#06 - Discover Japan’s Ancient Mountain Worship Culture: A Refreshing Getaway to Mount Mitake
While Mount Takao remains a popular spot among international visitors, I highly recommend exploring Mount Mitake, a hidden gem just a short train ride from Shinjuku via the JR Ōme Line. This scenic destination offers two main benefits. First, it’s much less crowded. Unlike the often-packed cable car at Mount Takao, Mount Mitake provides a more peaceful experience, especially on weekdays. The trails are safe and enjoyable for people of all ages, from children to seniors.
Second, it provides a cool, refreshing climate. At an elevation of 929 meters, the summit feels worlds away from Tokyo’s summer heat, often about 8°C cooler than the city below. I first visited Mount Mitake in September, when the temperatures were already mild. Spending the night at a shukubō (temple lodging) near the summit, I remember the air turning crisp by nightfall. It felt as if I had escaped to a highland retreat in Shinshū or Kōshū.
Musashi Mitake Shrine, located at the mountaintop, is also notable for being pet-friendly, which is a rare feature that draws many visitors. Seasonal offers even include free cable car rides for pets, so it’s worth checking for current promotions.

How to Get There: From Shinjuku to the Summit in One Smooth Trip
Start at Shinjuku Station and take the JR Chūō and Ōme Lines to Ōme Station (about an hour). Transfer to a train headed for Okutama and get off at Mitake Station (around 18 minutes). From there, a quick bus ride on a Nishi-Tokyo bus takes you to the “Cable Shita” bus stop. If you're driving, parking is available at the base cable car station. The cable car ride up the steep slope is an exciting experience, almost like an amusement park ride. Once at the summit station, a short walk leads to the shrine, where a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere awaits.

A Sacred Presence at the Summit: Musashi Mitake Shrine
Standing proudly at the top, the impressive Musashi Mitake Shrine is a sight to behold. The atmosphere is filled with sacred energy, and the view from the shrine grounds is truly breathtaking. On clear days, you can see all the way to the skyscrapers of Shinjuku in the distance, creating an awe-inspiring contrast that reminds you of how far you've come, both in elevation and spirit. The cool mountain breeze makes it easy to forget you're still in Tokyo.
After the Shrine Visit: A Peaceful Waterfall Hike Through the Rock Garden
No trip to Mount Mitake is complete without exploring the Rock Garden, a scenic hiking trail that takes about two to three hours at a relaxed pace. This captivating route follows a clear mountain stream, winding through moss-covered rocks and small waterfalls. The gentle sound of flowing water and the refreshing mist from the falls provide a calming escape from everyday life. Be sure to wear comfortable sneakers to fully enjoy the trail’s natural beauty and terrain.
Stay Overnight at a Traditional Temple Lodge
If time permits, consider spending a night at one of the local shukubō (temple lodgings). Many of these places offer traditional shōjin ryōri—Buddhist vegetarian dishes—which emphasize the purity and variety of seasonal vegetables. It’s a flavorful and meaningful way to experience Japan’s ancient mountain worship culture.
